For over three decades, ROXON, a global leader in material handling solutions, has supported Nordkalk AB, Northern Europe’s leading limestone producer, with reliable, high-performance equipment designed to endure.
Part of the NEPEAN family, ROXON combines local expertise with the strength of NEPEAN’s global capabilities, bringing world-class solutions to industries around the world.
This partnership recently reached new heights with the modification of equipment that ROXON had originally delivered in the 1980s for Nordkalk’s limestone operations in Gotland, Sweden. The success of this project not only underscores ROXON’s dedication to servicing equipment for its full lifecycle, but also highlights their ability to adapt and deliver solutions that meet the evolving needs of heavy industry.

Precision planning meets hands-on expertise
Nordkalk AB is a cornerstone of Northern Europe’s industry, supplying limestone-based products to sectors including construction, steel, and agriculture. Since the 1980s, Nordkalk has relied on ROXON’s expertise to ensure safe and efficient material handling across their operations, making them a long-standing, trusted customer.
ROXON’s overland conveyor, initially installed in 1988, and a ship loader modified by ROXON in 1984 had both served Nordkalk reliably for decades. But with time, the need for upgrades became apparent.
The project involved a belt and drive pulley change on the three-kilometre conveyor, and a portal modification on the ship loader – an extensive modernisation effort aimed at extending the operational life of equipment critical to Nordkalk’s logistics.
“We’re happy to service ROXON equipment for as long as the customer needs support,” explains Vesa Sarromaa, ROXON’s Project Sales Manager. “There’s equipment out there that was delivered by ROXON in the 1970s that’s still rocking. Why replace something that’s working?”
While on-site, ROXON was also tasked with further modifications to an existing tripper conveyor and hoppers.
The work had to be done within a narrow time frame to minimise downtime for Nordkalk’s operations. Additionally, the work had to be done within tight spaces. And while ROXON retained detailed records for their own equipment, missing documentation for equipment originally delivered by other companies required innovative approaches, such as 3D scanning, to develop accurate engineering plans.
Lifting and installation logistics would also require careful coordination, including the use of a specialised floating crane and considerations for weather conditions, which could disrupt the process.
“Detailed, professional planning was essential,” Vesa Sarromaa says. “Every aspect of the project had to be executed with expertise, from fitting new parts into old structures to managing environmental challenges on-site.”

In it for the long haul
In response to these challenges, ROXON approached the project with careful assessments and a highly detailed plan. Their team of skilled fitters and engineers executed each step with precision, ensuring Nordkalk could resume operations on schedule.
They replaced the existing belt on the overland conveyor with a state-of-the-art steel cord belt, rebuilt the BT133 tripper conveyor, modified the existing hoppers, and installed a new screening bypass line to enhance harbour operation – each move crucial to maintaining Nordkalk’s limestone shipments.
Ultimately, ROXON was able to seamlessly integrate new components into existing structures. The upgrades have significantly extended the life of Nordkalk’s equipment, ensuring that the overland conveyor, ship loader, tripper conveyor and hoppers remain safe, efficient, and productive for years to come.
“Nordkalk has seen real benefits from our ongoing support,” says Teemu Lahti, ROXON’s Manager of Systems & Modernisations. “They’re now equipped for at least another 20 years of efficient limestone transport.”
Feedback from Nordkalk has been overwhelmingly positive, with their team commending ROXON’s “pleasant staff at all levels” and responsiveness to their needs.
The Nordkalk project exemplifies ROXON’s dedication to supporting clients through the entire lifecycle of their equipment, and NEPEAN’s ability to provide ‘global expertise at your fingertips’ for clients around the world.
With a combination of technical expertise, meticulous planning, and an adaptable approach, ROXON and NEPEAN demonstrate that equipment built to last can indeed continue to perform – well beyond expectations.
